New Delhi: Government today asserted that it will do everything to provide reservation for OBC students in institutions of higher learning, including IITs and IIMs.
“We will do every thing possible to ensure that these institutions begin admission and provide reservation in 2008-09,” Finance Minister P Chidambaram told reporters when asked to comment on a Calcutta High Court order.
The Calcutta High Court had yesterday stayed the implementation of a government memorandum realating to 27% quota for OBCs in post graduate courses in IIMs prompting the Centre to approach the Supreme Court today seeking vacation of the Calcutta High Court order.
Chidambaram said the purpose behind the Centre approaching the apex court was to upturn the Calcutta High Court order so that admission can take place in 2008-09.
The Calcutta High Court has stayed quota for OBCs in post-graduate courses in Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta, and stopped interview of OBC candidates for the same.
The interim order stayed till June nine the operation of the reservation clause of IIM prospectus and also the resolution of office memorandum dated April 20, 2008 passed by the HRD ministry.

Has the Centre gone Crazy? If 27% be offered to OBC's, where would the general class people like us go? And in world-class institutes such as IIM, IIT and other MBA colleges, there should not be any quota system. Students who have the brains should be admitted. Not 5%, 7% or 8% its 27%, ARE YOU NUTS, YOU ALL ILLITERATE POLITICIANS? When Dr. Ambedkar devised this policy, it was for a specific period. After that, our vote-craving politicians have been extending the period. ALL YOU BRILLIANT STUDENTS, ITS TIME TO LEAVE INDIA; CAUSE OUR POLITICIANS WILL DO ANYTHING TO MAINTAIN THEIR SEAT. FOR OUR POLITICIANS, THIS IS NOT A FIGHT FOR HUMANITY, ITS A FIGHT FOR VOTES.

These superficial steps are not going to do any good to the country or backwards. The government needs to do hardwork and invest in building industries so that employment can be provided to the poorest. Only then poverty and backwardness can be removed. But it has been a policy of congress govt since independence to divide the society, keep people backward and garner their votes. Just look at the budgets presented by congress governments. They hardly invest in building capital. Most of their expenditure is revenue expenditure which reflects they believe in following populist measures like giving subsidies, grants (like to farmers this time) and keep people happy and get their votes. But that is not going to take the country anywhere is long term.
