New Delhi: The Rs2.27 lakh crore Indian dairy industry is expected to jump to Rs5.20 lakh crore by 2011, according to a report by a year book on the sector.

The 2007 edition of ‘Dairy India’, released here today, also said milk production in the country is likely to go up to 120 million tonnes from the current annual output of 100 million tonnes.

“Out of the anticipated output of 120 million tonnes, the share of liquid milk will be 97.5 million tonnes, while the remaining 22.5 million tonnes will get converted into milk products,” the year book said.

Releasing ‘Dairy India 2007’ Secretary in Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairy and Fisheries Charusheela Sohoni said, there was a need to improve milk productivity in the country.

“Dairy has brought about income stability in rural households in areas where agriculture is not successful,” she said, adding the industry would grow very fast and contribute more to the GDP.

The year book published by Sharad Gupta, would also be helpful for the government, Sohoni said.

Speaking on the occasion past President of Indian Dairy Association B P S Puri said there was an urgent need to increase the quality of milk in the country.

He said government should improve infrastructure as well as curb unhealthy practices to improve the quality of product.
