Where and why did you get these paintings?

I bought two paintings—Manmade Cavities and Uncut Monologues—in May from the Visual Arts Gallery at the India Habitat Centre. They are from an exhibition of George Martin’s works titled Lost Article. I went there out of curiosity, but fell in love with them the moment I saw them.

What drew you to these pieces?

The projection in Manmade Cavities appealed to me. This is a semi-abstract work, and the viewer gets the feeling of looking down from the top of a building. I love the interplay of colours in Uncut Monologues. I love art and collect different artists. I thought that these two paintings would make an interesting addition to my collection. I see them as happy works.

Where will you exhibit them?

These two paintings will be displayed in my husband’s office. One of them will go on his office wall.

What do you like about Martin’s work?

His style and use of colour are attractive. In addition, his use of Indian themes appeals to me. For example, the bandwalas and rickshawalas in his street scenes. I recall one particular painting which showed a mother feeding her child, sitting on a strange coil of wires. Martin’s frames have life around them, but the focus never shifts from the main subject.

What do you think of the explosion in Indian art?

I think this is just the beginning. We have a lot of untapped talent and some great upcoming artists. At times, I find the prices unreasonable. But it is wise to invest in art today.

Do you have a criteria for picking a work of art?

Not really. But the painting has to speak to me. Art is an emotional investment as well. One has to connect with it first.

George Martin’s works are available at prices ranging from Rs2 lakh to Rs3.5 lakh.
