Mumbai: In its bid to expand its footprint in the entertainment business, Anil Ambani-controlled Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG) is negotiating a buyout of India’s largest online movie rental company Seventymm Services Pvt. Ltd, which delivers video compact discs and digital video discs to homes of around 25,000 customers.

Reliance Entertainment Pvt. Ltd, part of ADAG, is already into movie rentals under the brand of Big Flix.

Seventymm chief operating officer Subhankar Sarkar denied buyout talks, but two senior ADAG and Seventymm executives, both of whom did not want to be identified, said negotiations were at an advanced stage. Terms of the potential acquisition were not immediately available. An ADAG spokesman said in an email that the group does not comment on speculation.

An executive at venture fund Matrix Partners India, a local arm of US-based firm Matrix Partners, which is one of the key investors in Seventymm with a $7 million (Rs28.7 crore) investment, too declined comment. Other backers of Seventymm include venture capital firms such as Draper Fisher Jurvetson and ePlanet Ventures.

Bangalore-based Seventymm is the largest online movie rental service in India, offering access to more than 15,000 titles across multiple languages including English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Assamese, Oriya, Bhojpuri, Rajasthani and Punjabi.

“This deal assumes significance as Seventymm claims 25,000 customers in six cities including Chandigarh, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Delhi and Mumbai. Reliance ADAG could smoothly launch online movie rental business as other majors are planning to getting into this space,” a senior executive of a rival online movie rental company, who does not want to be named, said.

He added that the market is set to grow significantly with the entry of firms such as Nimbus Communications and Moser Baer. The players in the online movie rental space today include Catchflix, Friday Box Office, Cinesprite and Clix Flix.

Seventymm, promoted by entrepreneur Raghav Kher, recently acquired New Delhi-based Madhouse, which was the first Indian company to offer movie DVD rental service through the Internet, phone and text messaging services, for an undisclosed amount.

Online Movie Rentals (Phew)!!!?!!?Even Netflix didnt generate this much of news when they crossed 5 mn customers. But true to our Indian style of being fixated withe BIG numbers - here goes. First 70mm gets funded 9 mn USD (2+7). Then not knowing how to spend their money and in the interest of those few elusive online renters scurry around the country side to set up shop while the rest of the country is renting on the road..Having done that and with still more money to spend and tons of free customers who are given free extensions ( a friend of mine is a member of 70mm and hasn't paid a single membership fee other than a deposit - which by the way he will get back after watching 30 FREE movies in 2 months), they buy what they cant build (Madhouse) - must have been a pretty MAD decision (from all accounts available seems Madhouse got a bad bunch to fund them and were pushed into a distress sale). Talk about frying pan to the fire.. Anyways, now comes BIG talk of 70MM being sold to Reliance ADAG. And these guys are supposd to be smart??? Dont know a lot about lots of things but when you pay good money it must be for a good business reason and not to buy hype.. But then again, what do I know, anything thats BIG must be built on hype..

Beware of Seventymm movie rental service---- I was the subscriber of Seventymm (Sub ID-47161)and being dissatisfied with the service,I opted for refund of my security deposit of RS. 999/- long back and I was really amazed by the indifference shown by them regarding refund of my security deposit of Rs.999/- nor have picked up the two movies from me inspite of being asked long ago. Everytime I send e-mail, they send their customary regret letter and subsequent telephone call from your office. They kept on assuring me to make payment within 15 days since Aug 21, 2007. Even after sending my various e-mail they replied in routine fashion assuring me of early payment and their customer care person even called me in the third week of January'2008 and said that cheque amounting to Rs. 999/- is ready for delivering the same at my office address. But till date , I have not heard anything from their end. Their service is public related service and I feel that such type of behaviour from this type of Company need to be brought to the notice of public in general through the appropriate medium as well as through initiation of appropriate legal proceedings. Also please note that, I tried to close the entire issue in an amicable manner, but, it appears that, they are not interested to close the issues once for all other than sending their hilarious regret mail from time to time.

I took this "1-DVD Unlimited 3 Months Plan" for Rs.849/- after I got a sales call for this.I was told that I'll be eligible for 1-DVD daily, provided I send an sms between 11:30pm and early morning 4:40am.Now after 55 days since I took this service,I have been delivered only 35 movies till date. Every week, despite of sending sms (5757570)on time,I'm not delivered movies for at least 2 days every week. In between there was 3 days when I didn't got any delivery of movies.I've been following up with your Customer Care(6060 0070),and I'm told every time that there were some technical issues, and this issue will not happen again, but it happens every week. And after the pathetic service, the Customer Care Executives are more pathetic. Today(10-Jun-09)I called up the Customer Care Executive and the person spoke very unprofessionally and rudely. He bluntly said-"we have provided 35 movies till date and it is a very good service we have provided to you and you will not find this kind of excellent service anywhere".When I said I'm not going to renew this plan if this kind of service continues,he said-"If you are not happy with the service, then we'll our self cancel this plan, once 90 days are over and we will not let you renew any service with us".I'm just wandering if he is doing any good to your company or harming the company's reputation.Well, with this kind of setup and behavior,I don't think the company is here to provide some good service to people.I think as I have been sms-ing every day,the company is not co-operating and not willing to extend any support to a customer like me. The Customer Care Executive added-"The company has already spent more than Rs.1000 in delivering movies to you", which clearly indicated that I should not expect any more good service. This is the worst kind of service I have ever faced from anywhere.

hi abhijit I completely agree with you. Seventymm can infact be the most pathetic and treacherous serice provider ever. I faced the same problem as you. they dnt deliver on time, at the place desired, movie VCDs/DVDs dnt run half the time, they dnt bother to take note of any of your complains. They dnt just ignore you royaly...they have the audacity to tell you that you can cancell your membership if ur so dissatisfied with their services and it no way makes any difference to them. Please let me konw how to take this issue further. I have been looking for someone in their managerial position to whom I can complain.

I clearly don’t know where to start this review with. Everything about BigFlix is a screw-up. Right from the membership plans and movie collection to the service. I took the membership couple months back & the headache never seems to stop. First it was the delivery promises, next was the incompetent systems and totally useless customer service, then the frauds which they commit. It is a disgrace to the existing movie rental services. Everything you see and hear about BigFlix is pathetic. I will list down the complaints I have had in the past 2 months. • At the time of signing up for a membership, I was told that they have excellent logistics systems & if I place a movie in queue before 10 AM on any given day, the movie will be delivered by 1400 hours same day. But this never happens. I place the request before 10 AM every time & I get the movies only by 1800 hours or even the next day at times. • BigFlix systems are so outdated and useless that the account is not updated. Forget real-time updation, there is not even a delayed updation. It takes 4-5 hours for the systems to be updated. • I signed up for the membership using my credit card and I remember very clearly that I did not opt for an auto-debit. But during the closing stages of the 1st month membership, I find an auto-debit instance in my account. I very clearly remember that I did not opt-in for auto-debit as I am not pro-auto debit payments. I had various interactions with the customer care and managed to record one such conversation. After these interactions my auto-debit was disabled. But now coming to the close of the 3rd month renewal I find the auto debit instance enabled in my account. How can an organization like Reliance indulge in a fraud as cheap as this? It’s not legal to indulge in such practices without the consent of the customer. • Queue is a facility wherein I line up movies according to my preference in my account so that they will be delivered on return of the movies which I took earl
