Paris: French luxury goods label Louis Vuitton is considering building a shoe plant in India, according to a newspaper report.

The manufacturing facility will be located near Pondicherry and would only attach soles to the uppers of Louis Vuitton shoes.

As a result, the shoes would still carry the “Made in Italy” label because most of the work involved would continue to be carried out in Italy, it said.

A spokesman for LVMH, Louis Vuitton’s French parent, denied that it was looking to emerging markets to cut manufacturing costs.

India is emerging as a big market with hi-end fashion stores and labels making their presence felt through exclusive outlets and franchising arrangements.
