New Delhi: Millions of rail travellers may soon have the option of gorging on McDonald’s burgers on-board trains, discussions for which are on between the railway authorities and the global fast food giant.

Buoyed by the successful bid for opening a restaurant at the Old Delhi Railway station, McDonald’s is gung-ho about the prospects of doing business with the railway network that has over a crore passengers every day.

“We are talking to the Railways but we are also aware that these things take times,” Vikram Bakshi, managing director of McDonald’s India franchisee (North and East) told PTI.

McDonald’s, which runs 126 restaurants in India, has recently won the bid for opening its first outlet at a railway station. For starters, it would open its outlet at the Old Delhi Railway Station, one of the busiest in the country. It expects to open more such outlets at other railway stations.

As for serving meals on journey, the American fast food chain would need to set up base kitchens at major stations, which may take a little longer.

As a part of its endeavour to provide quality meal to passengers, the Railways approached McDonald’s for feasibility of serving the fast food in trains.

“We require a fairly large kitchen with lots of facilities,” Bakshi said.

The company would presently focus on establishing outlets at the stations, which can act as the base kitchen for expansion of service in the train.
