Bipasha Basu only seems to be wearing Gauri and Nainika of late, Priyanka Chopra in Jean Paul Gaultier didn’t excite us, and Kareena Kapoor is on a sari spree. So, when we have a yen for some good ol’ red carpet glamour, the only Indian celebrity we can look to is Preity Zinta.

Zinta has done the rounds of awards functions, international film festivals and local events dressed in Elie Saab, Valentino, Alberta Ferretti, Fendi, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior. “She looks great in Western wear. Unfortunately, that can’t be said for most other Bollywood actresses. Preity knows what suits her, and she is not overtly fussy,” says a representative of an international luxury fashion house who did not want to be named. Another spokesperson for a foreign designer says: “Preity knows when to show a bit of bling and when to do understated glamour. We know our clothes will suit her because she won’t overdo her make-up and pile on the jewellery.”

Zinta wears minimal jewellery at most events (at one of her latest appearances, the CN Wadia Gold Cup Million Derby, her black wide-brimmed hat was a strong statement, so her jewellery was restrained and elegant—a pair of pearl-drop earrings).

Some more trivia from fashion houses that have dressed her: She loves dresses, doesn’t much like the colour purple, doesn’t mind showing off her legs and fits into a UK size 8.
