New Delhi: The government has decided to increase the digits in the postal index number (PIN) from six to eight to ensure speedier delivery of post.
The last two numbers in the eight-digit PIN code will help in identifying the specific mohalla (colony), Director of Postal Service Ashok Kumar said.
The Postal department has already identified some places in the country to introduce eight-digit PIN codes, he said, adding, “it will increase efficiency and expedite delivery of post”.
Under the new system, the last two digits ranging from 01 to 99 will indicate the name of mohalla and help the postman in identifying the address easily.
The eight-digit PIN code in future, Kumar said, will be used for segregating post by machine, which the department plans to introduce as part of the modernisation drive.
