Kharagpur: The Indian Institutes of Technology at Mumbai and Delhi may be the most glamorous of the seven IITs, with their smattering of Silicon Valley-funded start-ups, lavish cultural festivals and urban backdrop—but somehow another one has managed to surpass them.

“This IIT is where everything began,” says D. Acharya, the director at IIT Kharagpur. “Every major research area, be it biotechnology, advanced microchip facilities, the now fashionable entrepreneurship courses, industry-academia research collaborations, all came up from here,” the veteran professor says.

“Prior to Indian independence, there were researchers in universities, and there were engineers, who were little more than glorified technicians,” said M. Chakraborty, the institute’s deputy director, “and the IIT was set up so that India could have engineers capable of doing research.”

Fifty seven years down, the engineering college stands testament to that possibility. A 2007 ranking of the world’s 500 universities based on their academic prowess mentions only IIT Kharagpur and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.

“Remember that the IISc is exclusively for hard-core post-graduate research. Here, we have to manage research as well as our enormous undergraduate teaching responsibilities,” said Chakraborty. With nearly 1,500 peer-reviewed research publications a year, this means that every faculty member from the institute churns out three publications a year on an average. “I don’t want to boast, but I doubt if other universities, let alone engineering colleges, can boast of such a track record,” Acharya adds.

The reason why the college can pull this off, is because a good number of their professors are either involved with research projects that involve industry, or are themselves part of companies. So, for example, when a processor-making company such as Intel is not sure if their newly developed chip is foolproof, they would approach, say, Pallab Dasgupta in the computer science department. He and a few research scholars, typically PhD students, and in some cases master’s and BTech students, try to design a program that can scan and stonewall the chip for bugs.

So in a win-win sort of deal, the resulting knowledge ends up as research publications, and the project itself generates consultancy fees for the institute and professors. “To give you a ballpark figure, there are about 850 projects involving industry, worth Rs300 crore,” said Manoj Mondal, a senior administration officer at the institute’s Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy cell.

It is not very probable to compare an IIT with IT-BHU(atleast for the time being with 7 IIT's).IITG though being the youngest and being in a relatively geographically distant location has arguably the best infrastructure of all IIT's with all the depts equipped with state of the art facilities.. there has been 'hard core' research in almost all areas especially in nanotech where it can boast of being arguably one of the best in the country, with great placements and an equally good industry interface(which have been the parameters fr evaluation) it is quite obvious for it to be placed above IT-BHU.. and in fact deserved a better ranking..

it-bhu, varanasi is amongst the oldest universities in india, more than 90 years old. it is well equipped with all facilities and infrastructure. it has been a popular name in the field of research and development. moreever it has excellent placement records. it has rightly been placed above iit-g. if iit status wiil be granted to it-bhu then hopefully it will ranked above iit-r.

I Think this is the only IIT where student culture is still rocking at the best. If anybody have lived here and survived then he can survive anywhere else. The only reason that it was not in news so far cause it is not in a metro so it is far from media and secondly it does not have any airport in Kharagpur.

seriously guys and girls, i think we are wasting time arguing over this. the only IITs worth their 'IIT' tag are Kanpur, Kharagpur, Bombay and Madras, followed by BITS Pilani. IIT Delhi is going to the gallows, and the upcoming IITs are just a result of politics. they will never be able to emulate the top IITs. i am not saying this because i am in BITS Pilani. i am saying this because once you get into engineering, u'll find out that it's a new beginning. what matters in the end is how much u learn in ur 4yrs of engg, not which college u r from.

you must have heard that sayin "frog living in a well thinks there is nothing beyond it" so my friend BITS has no comparison wid any of IIT's. The intensity and amount of activities and research that goes on here are beyond comparison..... One person is sayin O.P. Jindal college should be no. 1 first go n check out an IIT dude.... IIT Roorkee is from where i belong and i could proudly say i never wanted more..... it's just not in metro, else in education and heritage it would have been on top. But other IITs are also awesome so no comparison! :) maybe we r less!!

And if u say IIT Kgp is good because it is d oldest IIT..then IITR is 100 years older than IITKgp..... so don't talk about heritage in front of Thomsonians. And maybe research and education is better there but we hav no level of knowledge to judge that fact who is better...... so go and research for 10 years then come with a conclusion....

I wanted to say that if you are a real college student, you don't go by the Institute Brand Tag on you but on what you get and build in yourself in four years of your Campus Life. So, all you college students out there, concentrate on improving "your" standards without making hulla-bulla about your College's status. Its clear from the mere fact that none of the Colleges in India cater to the needs of the society but just boast their brand!! SO..STOP Ranking Colleges!!
