New Delhi: Using its constitutional powers, the Union government on Thursday warned Karnataka and Orissa against the continued violence on Christian minorities.

Disclosing this, senior home ministry officials, who did not wish to be identified, said that the latest warning, the second for Orissa in the last fortnight, was issued under the constituional provisions enshrined in Article 355 — which says the Centre is bound to ensure that state governments carry out their constitutional responsibilities.

Mint had reported on 12 September that the centre had used the very same provision to warn Orissa.

Neither the officials of Orissa or Karnataka could be immediately reached for comment.
