New Delhi: It’s a different sight on the Delhi University campus these days. Gone are the speeding cars and noisy motorbikes – instead, many students are riding bicycles.

Students now increasingly prefer this mode of transport within the campus above any other. For many of them, renting a bicycle is a healthy option (why not get a work-out between classes, right?). And with the days of cheap gas gone, the alternative transport option is (thankfully especially for students) wallet-friendly, and it’s nice to be doing something good for environment.

Who’s responsible for this campus revolution? Well, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation started the rent-a-cycle project in October of last year, which has since gained a lot of popularity among students. During rush hour, many cycles here do as many as 75 to 80 rotations a day, between the station and campus.

Veerendra Chopra of Greeno’lution who implemented the project said, ”The project was a hit from day one. Right after its inauguration, 18 of our bicycles were rented out immediately. As of now, most of the days we have students calling us for advance booking to reserve three to four bicycles for them. And the rent is a mere Rs10 for four hours.”

The service is open from 6am till 11pm. Delhi University students are required to deposit their college identity cards before renting a bicycle, while outsiders can submit any identity proof like a driving license or a voter ID card.

Need another reason to join the revolution? According to Chopra, approximately seven bicycles can be parked in a single car parking space (!), allowing students to say goodbye to the days of hunting for a parking spot.
