New Delhi: Indian industry, which made a strong demand for “tougher laws” and “stronger and firmer leadership” to tackle terrorism, today hailed P Chidambaram’s appointment as the Home Minister, saying he can provide the right kind of leadership to tackle the menace.

Chidambaram replaces Shivraj Patil, who quit as the Home Minister. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has retained the Finance portfolio. Chidambaram was earlier Minister of state for Internal Security in Rajiv Gandhi’s government.

“Chidambaram has done extremely well as Finance Minister and we are sure he will be equally successful in improving the internal security,” said Assocham Secretary General D S Rawat.

President of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) Ganesh K Gupta, who is “personally anguished” at the killing of “innocent people” in Mumbai attack, said Chidambaram would provide the right kind of leadership required to deal with the internal security.

FICCI President Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who had actually voiced the demand for a “stronger and firmer leadership” to tackle the threat of terrorism, felt that the country did need a dynamic leadership.

India Inc has acknowledged Chidambaram’s contribution in steering the economy to a high growth trajectory and coming out with right kind of policy responses to the challenges posed by the global crisis.

Chidambaram is the worst choice. All he cares for is money and the corporate world. As a member of the committee set up to sort out the anomalies created by the 6th pay commission by the PM it was he who objected to removing the anomalies and he preferred the superiority of the police and babus over the armed forces. What will he do now ? Mumbai police which is considered the best in India could do nothing against these terrorist. Remember that without the armed forces India is nothing. People join the army for dignity and not money. India Inc should recognize this and should put in their part also not shy away like they have been doing all these years and stop pushing policies like land acquisition for them that only creates more home grown terrorists which makes it only more difficult for us to tackle terrorism.
