New Delhi: Barely a few hours after Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh offered to step down, Congress President Sonia Gandhi has started consultations with senior party leaders on the strategy ahead.

The AICC indicated during the discussions, which came after Deshmukh’s announcement in Mumbai that he had offered to put in his papers at the Congress Working Committee meeting on Saturday, that a decision on the issue would come in a day or two.

The matter has gained urgency as Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister R.R. Patil resigned today a day after Shivraj Patil was eased out as Union Home Minister.

Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and Minister of State in the PMO Prithviraj Chavan are two names doing the rounds as possible successors to Deshmukh.

Gandhi held consultations with newly appointed Home Minister P. Chidambaram, Defence Minister and in-charge of party affairs in Maharashtra A.K. Antony and senior party leader Ahmed Patel.

“I can only say that the Maharashtra chief minister has offered to resign. A coalition government is there and we have to consult the allies. Consultations are on. At this point, I cannot say anything. I can say later today or tomorrow,” Antony told reporters after the meeting.

Earlier in the day, Shinde also had a meeting with Gandhi.

The continuance of Deshmukh, who has been Chief Minister for over four years, became untenable after the state government came under severe criticism over last week’s terror attacks.

I find it ironic that the woman responsible for protecting Patil, her Chamcha, is now involved in choosing yet another of her sidekicks to safeguard the country's security.

why put the blame game on south block here? The people responsible for this are in Mumbai itself! Both CM and his deputy has the moral right to apologise for the tragic events that happened..which they never did on the first ground. They have to go.. That's the kind of anger is with the people of India now.

Though you guys are correct, let's put the blame game aside for the moment. Think how to push the agenda to reform: 1. Police force - undermanned, under equipped, underpaid and overworked 2. Judicial system - backlog of cases, too few judges, their accountability etc. Police and judicial reforms are big ticket items. If we can bring changes here then those died, will not have died in vain.

the best punishment for these top brass people is - instead of making them resign is to give them the lowest ministrial cadre which in itself is insulting to work... All happenings now amongst the centre and state ministers is a bloody gimmick to calm the common man's angry moods.... If you are a true citizen, boycott the elections. Here people were dying, and there hero Advani is busy campaigning....WOW...what a human being he is

And the award to knee-jerk reactions and thoughtless suggestions goes to.. A society of sheep in time begets a government of wolves.

The US president's desk has a plaque saying 'The buck stops here"In India the buck is very dynamic. It stops wherever Sonia "wills" it to stop.Anywhere, but at her doorstep. This time the fall guy is Shivraj Patil.Who, one may ask is responsible for persisting with the most inept, clueless and incompetent home minister India has ever seen.Sonia Gandhi is.Everyone knows who the casting director of the UPA government is.If Madame Gandhi's only metric is 'unquestioned fawning loyalty" she may want to consider getting herself a dog. This is what happens when you give someone Power without Accountibility. And our poor Mr Manmohan Singh is in the unenviable position of having 'responsibilty without power"This is one of the few concerns of the BJP that I wholly endorse. Can a system of governance be more prostituted than the current dispensation is.Now she is looking for a "Maratha" to succeed Vilasrao Deshmukh. For heaven's sake when will we see the day in our country when the best guy gets the job..irrespective of his/her birth, catse, religion and 'loyalty'.Indian leaders across the political spectrum sicken and revolt us with their sycophancy, supplicating 'soundbytes' which are little else but thinly disguised 'job applications' to their political masters. I am sorry..but I dont anymore feel proud to be Indian. This is a sad day in any citizens life.

All of you are correct. We have third rate leadership. Now what about our educated citizenry? All we want is heads to roll and we can get back to daily life. Where are our suggestions to change and improve things. Oh sorry about that I have to go and fight with the police constable who is trying to challan me when I talk on my cell phone and jump the red light when driving. Does he not know who I am. Pointing fingers is the easiest things. Suggestions for meaningful change require effort.
