New Delhi: Domestic and international long-distance call charges may fall soon as the government may accept the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (Trai) recommendation to allow the use of calling cards to provide a subscriber the option of choosing his or her operator.

Introducing calling cards to make STD and ISD calls is the best alternative to the carrier selection code (choice of operators) as this would save cost, which can be spent on upgrading the networks of existing operators.

Using calling cards will increase competition in the long-distance segment and may bring down international calling charges by up to 70%, analysts said.

In its recommendations submitted last year, Trai had said considering implementation issues such as estimating and sharing network setup or upgrade cost by long-distance operators, implementing carrier selection may not be justified in the present scenario.

The department of telecom (DoT) has forwarded its report for approval to the telecom commission, which is meeting here on Monday to consider it, officials familiar with the matter said.
