Chennai: As part of its initiatives to spread awareness about Internet, Google India on Tuesday announced the launch of mobile internet bus to provide the experience of worldwide web to people across Tamil Nadu.

The bus project is based on four themes — information, communication, entertainment and education, and it would have useful and informative content in English and Tamil, said Google India (Research and Development) Centre Head Prasad Ram.

“We want to educate people about the benefit of Internet and this bus would make them to understand the usage of Internet in a much effective way,” he said.

The bus would be covering 15 towns across the state over a period of one-and-a-half months, he said.

Google India Product Manager Prem Ramaswami said this was like a pilot project for them and based on the response they get from this project, they would continue it in other states as well.

“It is like a pilot study (for us). More than 19% of Tamilians prefer Google Tamil for accessing the Internet and that is also one of the reasons to launch the bus project from Tamil Nadu,” he said.

Explaining about the project, Prasad Ram said it would explain a user on what all services it could offer through audio-visual format so that a user would be able to get the required information.

He said once the project was completed, they would be able to share some vital information with the state government as well.

This is the best step for making awareness among the masses, spreading the importance of the internet. At the same time, if it covers the remote Government schools, and explains the usage of internet, then it's good for them.Any how I am very thankful to your valuable service. I hope you will continue in other states also as early as possible.

Good initiative from Google India... but for a long time, I'm surprised why Google's home page doesn't allow users to type in Tamil or atleast a transileration page (like in guruji.com), despite suggesting while doing a search in multiple indian languages like Tamil... I hope I havn't missed it so far...

For Google, this is yet another strategy to gain 'customer insights' that all its products are based on. I appreciate this strategy to get people to use its products and gain such insight. Really speaking, this initiative is part of Google's research to produce new innovative products that will rule the world in future, and that will make Google the largest and richest company in the world.
