Bangalore: India’s third largest software exporter by sales, Wipro Ltd, says it will focus on France and Germany in Europe and West Asia to offset slowing growth in the US as well as the UK.

“The entire Indian IT (information technology) export industry has been severely impacted because of developments in the US and UK markets. Wipro has taken steps to address newer markets in Europe and Asia which have been relatively insulated,” said Suresh Vaswani, joint chief executive officer, Wipro.

“In the Middle East, for instance, the opportunity to grow even further is large. Middle East economies have not been hit as hard as some of the other (economies globally),” he said. “We have good scope to broaden the services we offer in infrastructure management services, energy and utilities as well as retail space here (in West Asia).”

On expanding operations in countries such as France and Germany, where language skills had proved to be a hindrance, Vaswani said: “We have made significant headway by recruiting locally... We will grow in these markets.”

Wipro, which had set up a development centre in Germany in 2002, has since expanded its presence to six cities in the country. The company also has a large package implementation practice for German business software firm SAP AG.

Nearly 30% of the Bangalore-based company’s revenues come from Europe.

Vaswani said Wipro gets nearly 20% of its revenues from the Indian market. “We work with partners here and our system integration practice is very large.”

Wipro is also looking at expanding its health care, pharmaceuticals and governance verticals, aimed at offsetting the effects of the global economic slowdown.

Financial services firm Motilal Oswal Securities Ltd in a report on a post-results sectoral round-up of Indian IT companies, released on 3 February, pointed that even as blended realization rates for Infosys Technologies Ltd declined by 1.8% quarter-on-quarter and was flat from Tata Consultancy Services Ltd and HCL Technologies Ltd, Wipro reported realization of gains of 1.2%.

“Our value proposition is compelling and we belive that the current environment actually provides us an edge,” Vaswani said.

For the nine months ended 31 December, Wipro reported net profit of Rs2,890 crore on revenues of Rs19,092 crore.

See for Wipro Chairman Azim Premji, Customer is an asset as per his interview with moneycontrol.com. Customer gives more money and profits for making his employees put late hours and painful hours. So Customer is an asset for Premji, whereas a loyal employee is not an asset. Am I right Premji?

In these times of economic recession, where job security has become the most primary concern, when every second company is announcing massive layoffs, Wipro is amongst the very few who is not tempted to follow suit. It would be very inappropriate to say Mr Premji doesn't consider his employees as an asset.

If anybody's household income reduces, he has to take cost cutting measures so that he can manage his house. This subject should not be treated emotionally. If you have 3 servants in house and due to some financial constraint you ask one of the servants to leave, would it not be the same scenario? So if any company is taking measures to reduce operation costs including employee layoffs, it should be fine.

Niraj, It is proved that Wipro’s top management has given green signal to these TED, Technical Managers, Group Heads, Resource Managers, General Managers to somehow or other sack employees. So these middle level managers use all sorts of techniques to remove employees. All these methods are absolutely illegal and you can approach IT’es Union and take a legal opinion. Simultaneosly you can inform Labour commisioner( Govt of India). It is the responsibility of the government to create alternate employement to the victims if it cannot stop these malpractices in wipro ramanathan82@rocketmail.com stop investing in wipro stop giving land to wipro it another big scam company like satyam

The past one week witnessed two young IT engineers committing suicide. While one of them was a Wipro employee, the other was employed with HCL. Both the engineers died by jumping from their office building. According to a Silicon India report, Wipro engineer Vishal Yadav (29), had a BE in electronics and hailed from Madhya Pradesh. Since May 17, 2004, he was working with Wipro as a Business Analyst and had gone on leave for two months. Interestingly, he had put in his papers via e-mail and was supposed to be relieved of his duties on August 31. At around 10:20 pm on Wednesday, Vishal jumped from the top floor of S-II building of Wipro that has 12 storeys. When security supervisors heard a loud thud, they rushed to the spot and found Vishal down with blood around his body. They took him to the hospital, but it was in vain as doctor declared him brought dead. Doctors said, “With multiple head, spinal and thigh fractures, he might have collapsed within minutes after the fall.” Meanwhile, HCL engineer Vikas Kumar Sharma (26), hailed from Munger district in Bihar. Since January 1, 2009, he was working with HCL as Senior Network Analyst. He was living with a cousin in Delhi’s Katwaria Sarai area. Though he was on a official off on Wednesday, he decided to report for the duty. The company cab had brought Vikas to the office around 4.30 am. Around 5.50 am Vikas jumped from the 5th floor of the office building. He was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. Police have been trying to find the reason of the deaths as they could not find any suicide note or any threat related information till now. In Vishal’s case, police framed eight questions and sent them to the human resources department of Wipro, but even after 24 hours, they were unable to get any personal details of the dead man. However, an HR executive of Wipro said, “We have been directed not to reveal any information or photograph of the employee. It is just that he had quit the job and was serving the notice period.” A police officer said, “We are not ruling out murder. There are lots of unanswered questions and it is for Wipro to clear the doubts.” In the case of Vikas, Noida’s Superintendent of Police (City) Ashok Tripathi said, “The company’s officials did not inform the police about the incident. Authorities at Max Hospital, where the victim was taken to, informed us.”
