New Delhi: Ashok Nayak, who has led Light Combat Aircraft and other key projects, will take over as the new chairman of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) from 1 April succeeding Ashok K Baweja, who is retiring Tuesday.

On the eve of taking over his new assignment, Nayak said that HAL must “grab” all opportunities to stay atop the global aerospace industry.

“With the offset opportunity and massive new programmes coming up, HAL must find ways and means to capture all these opportunities for a safe and secure future. We have made an impact in the international market and will now have to focus on our exports further to stay ahead in the race”, he said.

Nayak, HAL’s 15th chairman, is a mechanical engineer from Bangalore university and joined the premier aeronautical agency as a management trainee in 1973.

In his career spanning over three decades, Nayak has held key positions in the fields of manufacturing, quality assurance, production, planning, customer services and export including a stint as general manager of aerospace division in 2004 where he looked after the manufacturing of GSLV Mk. III structural assemblies and tankages.

As general manager of HAL’s aircraft division in 2006, Nayak gave a fillip to concurrent engineering and upgrade of Jaguar aircraft.

In July 2007, as the managing director of company’s Bangalore Complex, Nayak was given the responsibility of leading seven vital divisions of the company including fleet serviceability and multiple projects like the Hawk, IJT and LCA aircraft.

Unconfirmed reports say that Baweja made a lot of money on the BAe Hawkjet deal, so its not surprising that the man he chose to replace him was also involved in the deal. This way Baweja can continue in future deal and money making

Mr. Ashok Nayak is a great man with few words. He deserves this position and I'm extremely happy he made it. Getting a Chairmanship doesn't depend on the ex-chairman nor it is necessary for person like Mr. Ashok Nayak to take any favors to get a high position. I strongly state that his hard work and sheer determination in his work is enough to show case him. I'm very confident that HAL will be safe & protected under his CHAIRMANSHIP. Many Congratulations to the hero and I wish him All the Very Best. Latha

Indian industry contains two types of people one is Professionals and other one is unprofessionals. The professionalism is not only by acquiring mere qualification, that is also by the spirit at which one is contributing to his industry. This kind of allegations are made only by unprofessionals. Only thing is that the top management, people , regulatory authorities , CVC and government should not give much importance for all this kind of rumours. Most of the true people will get affected by this kind of allegations even though they are not having any vested interests. Untill then Indial will not improve.

I am an ex HAL employee and have worked with Mr. Ashok Baweja and Mr. Ashok Nayak and strongly feel that I should comment. Mr. Ashok Baweja is a much decorated officer and perhaps HAL was not big enough for a man of his background and competence. Ashok Baweja is the son of the ex Director General of the Medical Services (a Doctor in the rank of Air Marshal) of Indian Air force. He joined HAL for a salary of Rs 500/- per month in the early seventies and plodded on for over three decades to reach the top. I happen to meet a common colleague of Mr. Baweja and self in London in 2007. This common colleague was in HAL with us for 15 years and then moved on to private sector. In 2007 the common colleague was CEO of an international company listed in London stock exchange and was earning a salary of over 2 crores plus bonus per year. What Mr. Baweja earned through salary in 35 years perhaps is not even 25% of one year salary of our common colleague. I have worked on the Jaguar project at HAL which was much bigger than the Hawk. Can the unknown source enlighten me how the money was made? Selection of HAL Chairman is done by the Public Sector Selection Board. The selection process is by inviting written applications and interview. The interview panel comprises of Secretary of Defence, Secretary of Defence Production, Chief of Army, Navy and Air force. How can Mr. Baweja choose his successor? Again an incorrect allegation. Mr. Nayak also have been with HAL for over three decades and it is a matter of pride for the Bangalore based company that after over 60 years of existence, a Kannadiga has made it to the top. I would humbly state that engineers of the calibre of Baweja and Nayak are doing HAL and the Indian aviation industry a favour by remaining with the organisation with a lifelong commitment and shed blood and sweat for insignificant returns. It is an affront to the integrity of professionals and should be condemned – Joe Thomas, Australia
