New Delhi: IITs will set up an Appellate Authority to address grievances of their employees and students about alleged discrimination and favouritism by the administration.

“The Appellate Authority will act like a grievance redressal mechanism and will take care of all types of disputes among the students, teachers and employee in the elite institutes,” an IIT director told PTI here.

The IIT Council, the apex decision making body of the elite institutes, has already given its go ahead for such a measure, he said.

The Appellate Authority can recommend redressal measures in cases of harassment, discrimination and favouritism. According to sources, the HRD Ministry gets a number of such complaints every year.

The IITs are of the view that setting up of such Appellate Authority will ensure transparency and insulate IITs from unsolicited interference and pressure from within or outside.

The HRD Ministry has also initiated steps to set up educational tribunals in the universities for addressing such disputes.

A committee, headed by higher education secretary R P Agrawal, has been set up to suggest measures for this purpose.
