In 1977, the whole of India heaved a sigh of relief when Indira Gandhi lost the parliamentary elections, since her imposition of Emergency rule in 1975 had suffocated people’s aspirations and gagged the free press. On 16 May 2009, the people of West Bengal heaved a similar sigh of relief—only a much more intense one. The Trinamool Congress and Indian National Congress combine captured 26 of the 42 parliamentary seats from the state, defeating the Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPM, and its allies for the first time since they came to power in West Bengal in 1977.

The CPM ran the state with an iron fist, and won every single state assembly or parliamentary election in the last 32 years. People were afraid of the CPM; whenever someone used the word “party”, it meant the CPM. Even though it had other partners in the coalition that ruled West Bengal, it basically ran the state as a single-party system (the Left Front is still in power in the state).

The CPM’s diktat was supreme: Police officers feared local party bosses; the administration in the districts could not function without the permission of district party bosses; businessmen had to recruit CPM cadre as staff; and government jobs went only to the party faithful. Democracy was trampled in college union elections, local government and assembly or parliamentary elections were rigged systematically. Yet, the mandate has been so hugely against the Communists that, two decades after the Berlin Wall collapsed, Bengal’s red bastion has fallen.

Though the CPM or the Left Front has suffered a humiliating defeat, this should not be seen as the end of leftism as an ideology, per se. Mamata Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress leader who led the alliance to such a decisive victory, thinks that leftism is not necessarily bad; it is the CPM that she sees as anti-people.

In fact, Banerjee’s distinctive style—she dresses in the most inexpensive saris and a pair of slippers—and the movements she has championed have the hallmark of leftist activism. She has led the successful movements of peasants and landless labourers against forcible acquisition of land in Singur and Nandigram. In the case of Singur, where Tata Motors wanted to build the Nano car factory, her opposition to forcible land acquisition led the Tatas to relocate the plant to another state. This earned her a lot of disrepute among large sections of the middle class in India.

Yet, the people of West Bengal felt democracy was their bread; but the butter of economic development could wait. Those who have first-hand experience of one-party dictatorships will easily relate to such a sentiment. The restoration of democracy in West Bengal was Banerjee’s first objective, and the 16 May results have given her a great opportunity in that direction.

The CPM, with its reckless trade unions, drove out thousands of entrepreneurs from the state. With Banerjee’s victory, the official Left will crumble. If she comes to power in West Bengal, her biggest challenge will be to manage the politics of a populist movement as well as the economics of progressive development in an era of globalization. The people of West Bengal have voted against party-led state repression and for democracy this time around. Next time, they would like to vote for the politics of development.

The old is crumbling in West Bengal. Whether Banerjee can create a lasting politics that ensures smooth and equitable development on the rubble left by a Stalinist Communist party, will be the key element in the coming years of West Bengal’s politics.

The CPM lost in West Bengal because of few reasons: a)Enormous negative and mischevious propaganda carried out by the media against it as evidenced by the pack of lies given by Mr Roy Chowdhury. b)Foolishnes, arrogance and clumsiness of Buddhadev bhattacharya. However offcial left(read CPM) will not collapse whatver one says it will come back if not in the next elections but within a few yrs. Basically Mamta Banerjee is a rabble rouser she has won votes based on an emotive issues. Once the emotions die down she will be back to her losing ways

What an excellent article! The title could not be better. Dear Mr. Arijit, you have to be at the receiving side of the CPM atrocity to understand what it really means. CPM will come back in west bengal when they lower down their tone, curb their arrogance and listen to the criticism. They still try to shield themselves from the criticism, even after this defeat. There is no future for it.

Mr. Roy Chowdhury´s article is very much true to the point & based on reality. It may be only a lame excuse for the CPM party members or supporters to say that one of the reasons of CPM´s total collapse in West Bengal is the result of "Enormous negative and mischevious propaganda carried out by the media against it". It´s rather rational to post-mortem the party´s ideology & past activites than to blame media or a single party leader for CPM´s collapse. Otherwise, CPM will never come back. It´s very easy to pass negative comment on Mamata Banerjee, but apart from her other qualities, her ordinary standard of living should be a shame to CPM leaders who lead an elite one. It´s not at all the emoton that played a role in the elction. On the contrary, it´s a fact that people can be befooled for a particular period of time & certainly not for all the time & that exactly what has happened with CPM in the election.

Its all very easy for TMC supporters to praise themselves for having supported the Mamta Banerjee for her ordinary standard of living. Fact is she is one of the rare persons who shamelessly calls herself an icon of honesty . People should remember that is was she who used to call herself a doctorate from Usa before it being denied by the Us Consulate. She has been jetsetting in a helicopter and flies to Delhi on a private jet so much for her ordinary lifestyle. One of her candidates Kabir Suman is accused to stealing her wives ' property so much for her honesty. People wont be fooled for ever by her ordinary dress just u wait . We will be eager to see how she turns Kolkata into London and North BEngal into Switzerland.

Left front lost a good number of Loksabha(national election) seats simply due to the fact that the chief minister was too hyped by the results of Bidhansabha 2006 (state election). He and Left front went for industrialization but did not do the home work properly and tried to do things very fast as per capitalistic demands. CPIM party itself is divided on this modus-oparendi and did not backed those steps in the grass root level therefore the whole process could not take shape rather made things messy. To be fair, CPIM and Leftfront has done much better over the years and was well supported by the people of bengal since last three decades. This time as they made the mistake TC-INC got a chance to make use of it. The propaganda was as if all fertile lands are going to be grabbed by Budhdhadeb bhattacharya and Left Front.2.5% Voters of the state decided to teach Left front a leasson too. Moreover, one should not forget that in the central election Left fron causes are much weaker than INC. Specially after INC was able to run the govenment successfully for the last five years. One can only say that the next state election is going to be more interesting and I am afraid it may turn more violent. I expected author to write about Mamata's autocracy too.The report is baised and based on common trends. I would like to request the author to come up with more statistics for the next article on similar topic. The heading containg the word 'finally' was contradicted in the article.

India is a poor country for last 5000 yrs. In Mahabharata, Dronacharya could not buy milk for his son. But democracy is in blood. Ramchandra had to send her wife to Jungle on public demand. India is full of resource. When there were no economic development also, Poor India could survive. But this soil doesn't tolerate suppression.
