Mumbai: At least 50% of the employees of National Aviation Co of India Ltd or Nacil, that runs Air India, will get their salaries on 3 July. Nacil had earlier said that June salaries would be deferred to 15 July due to a cash crunch. The decision to advance the payments follows talks between Nacil’s management with a section of unions that had threatened to strike work for deferring salaries. The delay in paying salaries is the first such by Nacil, which has at least 31,500 employees.

The salaries had been deferred due to a severe cash crunch the state-owned airline, which operates Air India, is facing. It has also asked the union government for at least Rs15,000 crore in fund infusion for the financial year ending March 2010.

George Abraham, general secretary of the Aviation Industry Employees’ Guild told Mint that the 50% that will be paid on 3 July largely comprises lower grade employees. A meeting is scheduled for 4 July to take a decision on salary disbursements for the remaining staff. Unions and management were making all possible efforts to not to disrupt the salary disbursements, he said. A Nacil spokesperson declined comment.

For about last 15 years Air India is always headed by a govt servant, a Sr official of Ministry of Civil Aviation and not any competent professional management man. these govt officials being Sr enough have no learning and training of Modern management technique required in the international completion that Air India faces. Air India does not recruit professional managers from IIMs or such other reputable institutes even at entry grade of Management. Most of the executives of Air India are low in Modern management techniques. The head of Air India used to draw less salary with govt than his colleagues in Air India. As such his pay packets and facilities increase with his deputation in Air India. He deals with big power and with large financial transactions in the international market. The possibility of large corruption can not be ruled out. Minister rules through this official of ministry and as a politician he can make a good buck for his party. In the competitive field of international aviation where instant decisions by professionals is need of the time Air India waits for approval of the minister and the ministry. Air India's equity is merely 145 Cr. which is less than even a cost of single aircraft that it flies. Who is responsible for this? Indian railways was running in loss. Lalu prasad Yadav is credited for turning it into profit making. Is Mr Praful Patel not responsible for the woes of Air India? Jet Airways and Kingfisher the main private Airlines are also suffering loss in thousands of crores. They have not paid the fuel bill of hundreds of crores. there is no cry about this because they can buy govt officials and are backed by capital from there business houses. Oil sector govt companies were running into loss. govt bailed it out; WHY? did any body asked? the crisi in air india the merged company of indian(indian airlines} and air india is not because of employees it is because of different civil aviation ministry policies.
