When television channels across the globe began beaming visuals of Velupillai Prabhakaran’s body on 19 May, there was shock first and then, disbelief.

Dressed in battle fatigues, his dog tag and his favourite revolver still on him, Prabhakaran’s skull was partially blown off, his eyes wide open even in death. Was he surprised? Shocked? Or simply frozen in fear when death came?

No one will know for sure the exact circumstances under which he was killed. We will have to accept the government’s word that he was killed in a fierce battle.

For, in this war, as in other conflicts, there were no witnesses.

Till 18 months ago, Prabhakaran’s Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) controlled one-third of Sri Lanka’s territory. He commanded a large army, a powerful navy and a rudimentary but effective air wing. Prabhakaran was the man who gave the world the suicide bomber. Under him, the LTTE assassinated a former Indian prime minister and a Sri Lankan president and a score of others.

So how was such a powerful terrorist organization brought to its knees?

The LTTE’s decimation can be attributed to two or three big reasons.

One, the Sri Lankan armed forces were given, for the first time in decades, a clear political-military objective by President Mahinda Rajapaksa: destroy the LTTE militarily. Sri Lanka’s army chief Sarath Fonseka explained in an interview to me, the difference between earlier military campaigns and this one, in one simple sentence: “This time we were playing for a win, not for a draw.”

Secondly, Fonseka, a battle-hardened veteran, had correctly assessed that the Tamil Tigers had expanded greatly in numbers, but had perhaps lost the agility and stealth that had made the group such a formidable adversary. So Fonseka converted his frontline assault units into a guerilla force by forming small, highly mobile, independent and lethal commando teams. These teams often infiltrated behind the enemy lines to isolate and then demolish LTTE defences.

Thirdly, Prabhakaran, who lived and survived on sheer instinct in the past, made the fatal mistake of keeping 300,000 Tamil civilians with him, as he retreated. These civilians hobbled him severely.

Prabhakaran also overestimated the ability of European nations and the Tamil diaspora to enforce a ceasefire as they had done in the past. This time, Sri Lanka was not going to listen to anyone.

For a professional journalist like me—and a long-time student of wars and insurgencies—the most fascinating aspect of Eelam War IV, as the conflict came to be known, was not just the military strategy but the flawless execution of information warfare and information operations technique by the Sri Lankan state.

I found the Sri Lankan methods of managing the media to be both effective and offensive. Offensive to my sensibilities as a journalist. Effective, purely as a warfare tool. The core strategy was to create a firewall around the battle zone. The objective was two-fold: control and denial. Control the flow of information and deny access to unpalatable foreign journalists.

Simultaneously, the government set up a one-stop shop for information from the battle zone. The Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) became the most important address for visiting and local media during the war. By putting in place this system, Sri Lanka virtually eliminated the possibility of any other source giving news to the information-hungry media.

The local media was tamed through twin methods of coercion and appealing to their chauvinism. Those who refused to fall in line were coerced, threatened and even killed (14 journalists lost their lives in Sri Lanka in the last four years) and all others were won over by a simple appeal: it is as much your war as ours, so please cooperate.

Simultaneously, pro-LTTE blogs and websites such as Tamilnet.com were blocked inside Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan state thus won the media war hands down. The result: a one-dimensional coverage of Eelam War IV.

For someone who’s also had the opportunity to report the subcontinent’s other big war in Kargil a decade ago, I was not happy being part of one-sided coverage this time, but to be fair to the Sri Lankan state, winning the information war was as imperative as gaining a military victory.

So what next in Sri Lanka? Will Rajapaksa be able to translate the military victory into permanent peace? Will Tamils ever get justice in Sri Lanka? How events pan out in the next one year will determine the long-term future of this tiny, beautiful but brutalized island.

Being on the front line was certainly important for me as a reporter, but the greater challenge will be to watch and analyse post-conflict Sri Lanka.

Nitin Gokhale is NDTV’s defence and strategic affairs editor and has reported extensively on the recent conflict in Sri Lanka. He is currently working on a book on Eelam War IV. Respond to this column at feedback@livemint.com

How can Sri Lankan government explain the two bodies of Prabaharan that they showed. One eyes wide opened another half closed? A dead body has the ability to close the eyes?

Dear Nitin, I did watch you coverage on NDTV however i must admit most of your reporting was just about GOSL and their war strategies for e.g you have not covered final battle of Aanandapuram where the LTTE did put up a ferious fight against lankan army (they were outnumbered by 10 to 1).I would expect a balaced coverage from a journalist of your caliber. Cheers, Arun

When everything is a one sided story - received from Sri Lanka's defence media house- how on earth one can believe the story of Prabhakaran's death? If sheer repression of news papers and journalists is a way of war how many in this civilized world would accept such a practice ? LTTE is defeated several times, and Prabhakaran was (is) killed several times in the past. Atleast some 'reputed' news houses in India reported the killing as if they have seen his killing and the defeat of LTTE. I am not sure NDTV has seen this war as like as other Indian reputed media houses, What would NDTV do if the war starts once again and the same commentaries are read once again.

Will Tamils ever get justice in Sri Lanka???? Please tell us what's the injustice that the Tamils are facing in Sri Lanka other than Sinhalese or other ethnic groups? It's the Tamil Politicians who tell and use this myth for political gain. WE Sri Lankan citizen do not see any injuctice on citizens being Tamil. But I know there are injustice in some parts of the country regardless the ethnicity. Let Mahinda Rjapaksa, the unusual leader it. I have a strong beleife that the present president does the justice to the people who love the country. Be patient.

There are other more important reasons as to why the Sri Lankan military won the war. The Karuna rebellion in the East. The fact that Congress party and Sonia were blinded by revenge that they helped the Singhalese Buddhist against the very natural, long term allies of India, the Tamils. The Indian people don't understand that the Buddhist Singhalese hate Hinduism (all Hindus) and therefor in the long run the Hindu Tamils are a buffer to India against one of their long term enemies, the Singhalese. Very bad strategic mistake that the future generations of Indians will rue. The most important reason that the Singhalese Army won, was the manner in which they conducted the war, i.e in a genocidal manner, where they used heavy weaponary against the civilians, i.e. they bombed the entire regions where the Tigers lived, killing and maiming everyone and used cluster and chemical weapons. This is unacceptable warfare, any larger power can resort to this. This was something the IPKF could have easily resorted to as well, but they did not, as it was uncivilized and immoral. Tomorrow the US can solve the military problem in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan by just removing their troops from their and using their nuclear weapons on these countries. The only thing is that there will be very few survivors after that. Sorry to say the author of this article has very poor knowledge. Sad that in India there are so few intelligent people with analytical skills. All these things I mentioned are obvious, and this author writes without knowledge of even the basic events of what happened in Sri Lanka.

Hi Nitin, Congratulations on your article. Independent Journalists like you from the sub continent are an inspiration. Such reporting also expose the biased and incorrect reporting of the West. In that sense you are also performing a historical function in the present era.

Nitin Gokhale, While I was initially curios to read the observations of an Indian journalist, who has interviewed the top military official in Sri Lanka, I was also quite amused by the level which you have been gullible. One can write a story that is true, and one can also write fairy tales using the designation of a journalist and no one can challenge you in doing so. The Sri Lankan Government has not won any war against the LTTE who has stood up for the rights of the Tamil people for so long, maybe a battle. If the GOSL is to win the war, the average Tamil citizen of the country should be able to say so (confirm it) in all honesty and by no means the GOSL. The very simple truth that began a war against the GOSL in the first place was because the Tamil population were being discriminated from equal existence in the country. That has not changed yet, and the Tamil population still continue to live in fear and frustration in Sri Lanka. It is not the wish of any Tamil person living in Sri Lanka or abroad to win a war with the GOSL, however the LTTE gave a sense of security that 'there is someone to watch my back' with the LTTE fighting in the northern part of the country. This could also be termed as a sense of pride too, but a sense of pride that was silent unless among family. So before you write your book with the aim of rivaling that which was written by the likes of Anita Pratap and get rich with its sales I urge you to consider the lives of those who have fought so far, and continue to fight for the freedom of the Tamil people in Sri Lanka. You as a journalist have an huge amount of free will (not more or less than any other) and the power to create consensus (definitely more than most) to what you write in the way you write it, however if facts have anything to do with what you will write please be 'just' with it. The LTTE fought for freedom the way they chose to, and to many it might seem that all of the LTTE was Tamil but that is not true. Yet at the same time to some it may also seem that all Tamils are LTTE, now that is a fact that will never be proven. Writing about war and insurgency might be what brings your level of adrenaline high, but to many hundreds of thousands or probably millions who live today and will see the light of this world in the future, it is not entertainment but the fate created by those who record the story. The LTTE did not stop fighting because they couldn't fight back any more, this was clearly seen as the military media unit choose to show the weaponry they (the LTTE) never used, but because the GOSL was using them as a reason to murder all who were not SL military in the area and included innocent civilians, to whom a glass of clean water means the world to, even to this day. One must not applaud the action taken by the GOSL to shut out the media from telling "the truth" of what happened or else whats the point of reading anything that is written on the subject now. Your greatest challenge as a journalist is to get the facts from both sides of the story or all sides - more specifically -, so please do that and let the people make their own judgments by reading the "truth" and not something half hearted and one sided. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this email so far, and note with interest that I am writing to you not mentioning the name given to me by my parents, the that is on my passport. However I will call myself a patriot because Sri Lanka is not home to just one race of people but many and all we want is the same any other living in any other part of this wants - to live in freedom - Peace is not the absence of violence but the presence of justice. Their is only one form of injustice, "THEFT" and all other injustices are children of "THEFT". If freedom is stolen, what does any other passion count for? If you write your book, please write it not for fame or fortune, but because you care. But don't steal freedom through your words. Patriottoo

This text of Nithin is nothing as it does not reveal the war it waged against the Tamils. This is a one-side story told by the Senior Military man in Sri Lanka and retold by the Mainstream Indian media. Even N. Ram wrote the same thing in his newspaper. Nithin, you must come down to Sri Lanka to see whether the war is really ended by the so-called power hungry Rajapakse. It is once again raging. Rajapakse has failed in every sense. Now is the time the real war has begun. In the camps everyday the IDP's are screened and murdered alleging that they are LTTE supporters. In Wellawatte where the Tamils live, army and police have been deployed to keep a thorough check on the people's movements. Freedom of Movement of the Tamils have been gravely affected by GOSL security measures. The government has failed to relax the security points they maintained before the war. This clearly depicts how much the Government of Sri Lanka fears of the emergence of another wave of protests from the Tamils. The international community must 'demand' GOSL to adhere to 'good governance' and release all the IDP's and pardon the ex-LTTE combatants. There is no need in continuing the war against LTTE as it will further the war and make matters more complicated. GOSL thinks that they could exterminate LTTE. It is a wrong thinking as LTTE is just one aspect of the whole issue of Tamils. WE DEMAND THE GOVERNMENT OF SRI LANKA TO RESTORE DEMOCRACY IN THE COUNTRY AND ENSURE RIGHTS OF THE TAMILS AS EXPLAINED IN THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS.
