The lead, however, was marginal. Zee TV grossed 243.1 gross rating points (GRPs) in the week and Colors, the entertainment channel of Viacom 18 Media Private Ltd, clocked 242.8 GRPs. Star Plus, the channel that led the Hindi entertainment genre for almost a decade, grossed 218.5 GRPs.

GRPs are a total of television rating points (TRP) over a period of time. TRP is a measure of the percentage of viewers watching a particular programme at a given time.

Zee TV managed to top the list after 10 years. “We are overwhelmed by the viewer’s response for all our shows,” said Nitin Vaidya, chief operating officer of Zee Entertainment.

Zee TV was steady on the second slot before Colors, within three months of its launch in July last year, pushed it to number three.

In April, Colors topped the list and stayed there for four weeks. Star Plus, the flagship channel of News Corp.’s Indian subsidiary Star India Pvt. Ltd, then reclaimed its leadership position for some time.

“We have reached a stage where the market will witness a see-saw movement at the top,” said Rajesh Kamat, chief executive of Colors.

“The three players will continue to be engaged in a weekly battle for the top slot,” he added.
