Directed by Sunil Rawat, this play weaves five slice-of-life stories by acclaimed Urdu writer Saadat Hasan Manto together. The sometimes funny, sometimes tragic stories revolve around love, social morality, inequity and hypocrisy.

Queer Azaadi Screening

The timing of the event is perfect for Mumbai’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community. In addition to celebrating the judgement on Article 377, it will serve as a curtain-raiser to the pride march that is planned for 16 August. The festival of documentaries and shorts is being organized by Queer Azaadi March, the umbrella organization of LGBT groups that organized the city’s first gay pride march last year. The five films by local and international directors are aimed at the “queer” community as well as straight folk.

Janaka Selekta

For almost 10 years, San Francisco-based Janaka Atugoda has worked with a collective of 21 artistes, electronic musicians, Indian classical musicians, graphic and Web designers. Their cause: to explore the meeting point between their Asian cultural heritage and the experience of growing up in the West. His debut album Pushing Air continues that discussion and gives the city a taste of his slow dub aesthetic.

The Exit

The sight of Anindita Dutta’s sculptural installations might make you think her show is inspired by Jean Paul Sartre’s play No Exit, about three people in hell. Enormous bones are laid out on the floor and red fabric oozes out of giant pelvic bones. There are broken bodies too. Amid all the wreckage, the neon exit sign glows with the hope that Sartre did not extend to his characters.

During the monsoon, it has become de rigueur to stage concerts on the theme of raga Malhar. The first half typically comprises renditions of principal ragas such as Miyan Ka Malhar, Megh Malhar and Gaud Malhar, while the second half is devoted to compound ragas such as Jayant Malhar, Des Malhar and Vrindavani Malhar. This fortnight, six students of veteran Jaipur-Atrauli singer Manik Bhide will forgo the predictable and present a concert highlighting varieties of raga Nat.

He was thinking about a few lectures by Stephen Hawking and the works of Carl Sagan. “The whole thing came about as I was watching videos of Hawking on time and space and things like that…that everything is perceived with reference to where you are at a particular moment,” says the photographer.

One day, he is gifted a treasure that is sufficient to change his life. But the burden of the wealth has a shattering impact on his life. He is unable to concentrate on his work and his daily life is wrecked.

Leela—Paintings by KC Pyne and P P Deb
3–14 August
The exhibition is based on the Leela theory of creation in the Upanishads, which proposes that the motivating force of all creation is leela, or play—a dynamic process that ends in the joy of creation. The premise is that without being driven by joyous play, all creation is bound to be contrived.
Pyne and Deb’s works convey the feeling of self-absorbed play. Their oeuvres are studies in contrast.The former’s pastoralist imagination and nature-oriented lyricism contrasts sharply with Deb’s humorous gaze and technological orientation. However, transcending all these differences is leela or leela-khela, and both their oeuvres transmit this sense.
