Mumbai: The investigation wing of the income-tax (I-T) department in Mumbai on Friday carried out searches in two cities of the offices of Juniper Networks India Pvt. Ltd, a unit of Juniper Networks Inc.

The Sunnyvale, California-based information technology firm is the world’s second largest maker of equipment for directing Internet traffic.

An I-T official, who did not want to be identified, confirmed the development and said: “The department is searching the Bangalore and Mumbai offices of the company.” He also said that the investigation wing of the department has detected substantial amounts of money being siphoned off. The I-T official declined to divulge details.

Sridhar Sarathy, vice-president of Juniper Networks India, said: “We don’t comment on pending investigation.”

Juniper Networks Inc. makes switches and routers—the hardware that helps manage computer and telecom networks—and competes with firms such as Cisco Systems Inc. The firm’s equipment has been used to build wide area networks in states such as Himachal Pradesh and Bihar.

Juniper, which employs 1,250 workers, including those in its research and development unit in Bangalore, has invested $200 million (Rs964 crore) in India. In September, it had committed to investing $400 million over five years.

Juniper does not share its India revenue numbers. Globally, Juniper earned revenues of $3.57 billion in 2008. In India, it has sales offices in Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai and New Delhi.

Your news-story about the Juniper Networks' Mumbai Office IT raid comes as a real shocker to me. Well, The R&D is mostly carried out in the US and the Bangalore center, and the Mumbai Center should be the Sales and Marketing Office or something, given the I-T department's suspicion, that, the office had a lot of cash. But, I would not be surprised given Juniper has the second largest market share of the Networking equipment in the whole world (after Cisco). Anyhow, that is for the I-T department to decide now. I would sure like to follow-up the story and how it develops further. But thanks for bringing this to our notice.

This is mostly like be a conspiracy by Cisco Systems, who had a huge influence in Indian Government. Cisco is seriously worried of its losing market shares to juniper especially in APAC countries. Not to be forgetten Cisco had to close down its Brazilian office due to tax frauds http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cisco_Systems#Cisco.27s_Brazil_Tax_Fraud_Investigation

Juniper is gaining market share by eating up Cisco's customer. Customers have now realized that they were paying extra price till date for not that great technology. Juniper is able to replace Cisco from Core Routing market share in ASIA-PAC and looking at trend it will be soon in other regions/market domain. Cisco is firing wherein Juniper is hiring and investing in India. Cisco is using all tricks in their sleeve's to retain their customer & surely this is part of their campaign
