Mumbai: Private carrier Jet Airways (India) Ltd on Monday sought time till 7 September from the labour commissioner’s office to study the registration documents of the National Aviators Guild (NAG), a new pilots’ union formed in July.

The office of the deputy labour commissioner (central), under the ministry of labour and employment, on Monday held a four-hour conciliation meeting with the management of the airline and NAG.

The union, however, said it would go ahead with the strike beginning 7 September and blamed the airline’s management for not coming to the meeting with any proposal to settle the issue.

NAG is asking for the reinstatement of two of its founder members who were fired in August.

“The Jet management has asked for some time to decide and reply. We are hopeful of an early solution. Till such time our stand remains the same,” said NAG president Girish Kaushik in a late evening statement.

Jet Airways, India’s second largest airline by passenger traffic, maintained its earlier stance that pilots cannot go on strike till conciliation proceedings are on.

“The conciliation officer has directed that the National Aviator’s Guild members cannot resort to strike or cause disruption to the operations on 7 September 2009 or thereafter, pending completion of the Conciliation proceedings,” a Jet Airways spokesperson said in a statement. “The proceedings will resume on 14 September.”
