Varanasi may be blessed by a lack of industries contaminating the Ganga with their toxic effluent, but it makes up for that deficit with its domestic sewage. To navigate the river along Varanasi is to take in a panorama of multiple drains emptying into the Ganga, and of residents and tourists ignoring these sights to complete their washing, their work and their worship.
