Mumbai: Average pre-placement salaries offered to students at the premier Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are lower by about half this year, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

The number of companies that have registered for final placements, too, has gone down by around 45%, they said on condition of anonymity.

Officials at IIT Bombay said the average salary for pre-placement offers has dropped to Rs5 lakh a year from Rs9 lakh earlier.

Average pre-placement salaries offered to students at IIT Kharagpur have dropped by 65% to Rs4 lakh.

The people said that only 12 companies have registered with IIT Bombay for the final campus placement round so far, against 45 registrations by October last year.

At IIT Kharagpur, 10 companies have registered for the final placement, down from 38 earlier, they said.

Registrations at IIT Lucknow have dropped to eight from 25 last year and at IIT Kanpur by 48% to 12.

IITs are now considering reducing the registration fees charged to companies for the final campus placement rounds, they said.

Experts say one reason for the fall in registrations could be that some large recruiters such as Accenture, Wipro Ltd and Infosys Technologies Ltd may visit campuses only by the eighth semester around March.
