New Delhi: India and Myanmar have to prioritize security cooperation and forge close ties between their security forces to snuff out “the pernicious problem of terrorism,” a joint statement after talks between Myanmarese Senior General Than Shwe and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said.

India’s north east -- which borders Myanmar is riven by a myriad of insurgencies with New Delhi saying some groups take shelter in the jungles of Myanmar.

Both sides also agreed to deepen economic engagement with India promising continued developmental assistance to Myanmar that has been under international sanctions for going slow on democratic reforms.

India announced a $10 million grant to Myanmar for the procurement of agricultural machinery. Energy and power sectors were also identified as areas with immense potential for cooperation, the statement said.
