The year 2011 saw 427 private equity (PE) and venture capital (VC) deals worth $11.19 billion, compared with investments worth $7.96 billion across 328 deals in 2010. With the public market drying up and debt becoming costlier, Indian companies turned to PE investors for fresh funding. The year also saw a surge in the number of high-value deals—there were 30 deals of more than $100 million in value (worth $5.91 billion, or 53% of total investments) compared with 19 deals (worth $3.46 billion) in 2010.

Correspondingly, the average deal size for the year went up by 16% to $32.9 million. Mint, in association with Four-S Services, presents a snapshot of the private equity landscape in India.
