It is well known that India’s aviation sector is in crisis. Burdened by a toxic legacy of debt and the hunt for illusory market share, these firms are living almost on a day-to-day basis.

As reported by the Press Trust of India, a group of ministers is meeting this week to discuss issues that range from permitting foreign investment in aviation companies to letting these firms directly import aviation turbine fuel (ATF).

It will be best if the government created conditions for the revival of the sector and left the survival of individual companies to the market. For example, if these companies are allowed to import ATF directly, it will hurt various states that will lose revenue. This money is used to fund far more important needs such as providing public services in the states. The government has no business trying to ensure the survival of individual companies, public or private.
