Chennai: The chairman of New York City’s Planning Commission, Amanda M Burden, was in Chennai, talking about how NYC and Chennai have similar issues, both being growing cities. She highlights the benefits of cutting down on cars and promoting cycling and the construction of footpaths. While discussing the problems related to developers and land use, Burden said it’s important to improve the public space and provide incentives, so that the matter is taken up seriously.

Amanda pointed out that re-zoning proved beneficial for New York City and could benefit Chennai as well. It is one way to ensure that newer development is always located near mass transit. She also spoke about combining transport policy with land use policy, especially in the case of Chennai, to ensure provision of greater options for commuters.

When asked how to best implement new systems in an old city, Amanda said ”One of the best techniques would be using Pilot Projects...”, adding to which she also said that city authorities need to build on the feedback they receive from the residents of the area, as well as present a pictorial representation of what they foresee from the city’s developments.
