The All India Bar Exam (AIBE) has slowly but surely come to establish itself as a quality control mechanism for young lawyers entering the profession.

Although the move was hugely resisted—several petitions were filed against it in the Supreme Court and high courts—the Bar Council of India has managed to keep the exam afloat. Statistics show an increasing number of law graduates are signing up to take the AIBE, although the pass rate has also fallen slightly.

However, the fall in pass rates could be attributed to the difficulty level of the questions, which reportedly went up in the last two editions. The next edition of the exam is scheduled for June 2012. Besides this, the exam appears to be a reasonable revenue generator for BCI to fund its regulation of law schools
