Can India afford its villages?
The answer to the problems of our rural economy paradoxically lies in urban development

Finally someone has said what i have been trying to say all along. This stupid romanticizing of rural life needs to get a reality check. We need to urbanize this country. With higher efficiency in farming, 5% of population ought to be able to feed the whole population. Imagine if we can have all these people doing work at a higher end of the value chain. That would give a good fillip to the economy. Our farming so inefficient that we produce 3mt rice per acre whereas Egypt (supposedly mostly desert) produces 9 mt. It is more efficient to convert farm lands to SEZ and import rice from Egypt !
