"It is a universal belief that defence expenditure is a waste of valuable resources. In an absolute sense, that may be a fact" -- Lost you right there. Defence expenditure is not a waste. It's required to protect the border and both your and mine delicate rears. You may be the paragon of civilization and culture, but it's all worthless if you can't at the same time protect the people from the barbarians at the gates.
