Nepal after monarchy is at risk of civil strife
The recently deposed king of Nepal attracted a lot of hostility and his son, too, was widely unpopular

Dear Mr. Jaithirth Rao; I read your article posted on Livemint.com, 'Nepal after monarchy....'. I very much agree to your article and the examples of nations that have gone through the phase. Many in Nepal did not want the institution of monarchy to be abolished. However, it was abolished due to the 'grand design' of the political parties with the help of the Indian establishment. It is very unfortunate that such action was taken without understanding its long term effect in society, culture, traditional and nations. Nepal at present is in disintegration process. We have Indian government interference in our internal affairs to a great height. Everything happened in Nepal was designed and formulated by the Indian government. Monarchy had been an obstacle for many years for Indian Government to implement its plans in Nepal. During 13 years of Maoist insurgency, India harbored Maoist terrorists in their land against Nepal. They acted against their neighboring state by harboring, and providing weapons to create disturbance in Nepal for years. It is very unfortunate that such was done and many generations in Nepal will remember India for what they did. When King Gyanendra took absolute power and the street protests were high. India sent Dr. Karan Singh as an especial envoy to Nepal to talk to His Majesty King Gyanendra, to hand over power to political parties. The Envoy also stated to the King that India would secure his position and his future generations in the throne of Nepal only if the King gave foreign and defense affairs of Nepal to India. In other words to make Nepal like Bhutan if not Sikkim. The King strongly refused to compromise Nepal's sovereignty. Later he handed over his powers to PM Koirala who took the oath of office with the King, only to sack the King. This itself was unconstitutional and to reinstate the defunct parliament was in every way illegal. Many in Nepal attacked King for taking absolute power. Although he was never a despotic King, but many still went against him. The people forgot the Maoists that had killed 15.000 innocent Nepalis in a brink of seconds. It is like a joke. How could a terrorist be praised for what he did. Prachanda is nothing more than a terrorists who killed thousands of Nepalis in Nepal. He should be brought to justice. I am sure sooner or later he will ultimately pay price for what he did in Nepal. If it was not India, this unfortunate incident would not have occurred. By harboring Nepalis terrorists in their land and very openly having duologues with them in India, it furthur stained India's relations with Nepal. Time will tell if not heal. Sincerely,Jay Mehta.
