GMR Infra-led consortium wins freight corridor projects
The consortium has received a so-called letter of award to build the projects on an engineering, procurement and construction basis, GMR says
Mumbai: GMR Infrastructure Ltd said on Tuesday that a consortium it leads has won two projects to build parts of India’s upcoming eastern cargo rail corridor, adding up to 221km, at a cost of ₹ 2,280.70 crore.
The consortium has received a so-called letter of award to build the projects on an engineering, procurement and construction basis, GMR said.
The eastern dedicated freight corridor (DFC) project, running from West Bengal to Punjab, is financed by the World Bank.
The consortium beat five rivals to win the global bids for the project in April, GMR said in a statement.
The GMR-led consortium will build the 175km single line connecting Sahnewal and Pilkhani that passes through Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab, and a 46-km double line corridor in Uttar Pradesh connecting Dadri and Khurja. These are expected to be completed in 44 months and 36 months, respectively, GMR said.
The two planned DFCs are key to Indian Railways’ plan to decongest its network. In its first phase, the railways aims to complete two corridors—Western DFC (Uttar Pradesh to Mumbai) and Eastern DFC (West Bengal to Punjab)—by December 2019, with commissioning in segments beginning from 2017-18.
GMR Infrastructure, which has interests in airports, energy, transportation and urban infrastructure, is already working on a 417-km-long eastern dedicated freight corridor railway project that comprises of two corridors in Uttar Pradesh: a 180km-long corridor connecting Mughalsarai and Karchana; and a 237km-long corridor connecting Karchana and Bhaupur.
GMR Group has 15 power generation projects and nine operating road assets.
