BPCL to review cutting refining capacity by tomorrow

Mumbai: State-run Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL) has said that it will decide whether to lower capacity at its Mumbai and Kochi refineries because of the indefinite strike by officers of oil companies.

“We will take a call later tonight or by tomorrow morning whether to reduce capacities at our refineries in Mumbai and Kochi," a BPCL spokesperson said.

The fuel retailer’s Mumbai refinery has a refining capacity of 12 million tonnes per annum (mmtpa), while the Kochi refinery can process 7.5 mmtpa of crude oil annually.

“Both the refineries are running full capacity as of now," he said.

“Nearly 70% of the downstream firm’s employees did not report for work today. Attendance has been 27-30% among the 4,000-odd employees at the 300 units across the country," the spokesperson said.

These include refineries, aviation stations, LPG bottling plants and territorial offices, among other units.

The spokesperson said that so far today BPCL has not experienced any irregularities in crude shipments at its refineries.

“Customers have not been inconvenienced as LPG supplies are not affected," he said adding: “We have taken precaution. Even if operations at the refineries halt, (we have) storage tankers well-stocked."

As part of contingency plans, oil-marketing companies have stocked up for 15-20 days.
