Unions, govt agree on wages; strike averted
Bangalore: The Union government and labour unions have agreed to a 23% hike in the wages of some 66,000 port and dock workers employed at the 12 central government-owned ports, averting an indefinite strike called by the workers unions from 15 September.
“The strike has been averted because of intervention by the Union shipping minister G.K. Vasan," M.L. Bellani, secretary, All India Port and Dock Workers Federation said. Vasan offered a hike of 23%, which was acceptable to both sides, Bellani said.
