Mumbai: Autodesk Inc., an American software company with Indian operations based out of Bangalore, has announced an investment of up to $100 million in 3D printing companies over the next several years, through the creation of a ‘Spark Investment Fund’. The fund, which will be operated within Autodesk, will invest in entrepreneurs, start-ups and researchers working on 3D printing technology.

Earlier this year, Autodesk announced Spark, an open and free software platform for 3D printing that will connect digital information to 3D printers in a new way. Spark will connect to any hardware and be materials agnostic, and the company invited the entire 3D printing community to collaborate, build and improve the platform.

“Numerous industries recognize the value of tapping into entrepreneurs or start-ups with better ideas and approaches, and 3D printing is no exception," said Samir Hanna, vice-president and general manager, consumer products and 3D printing, at Autodesk in a statement.

On 28 July, e-commerce giant Amazon.com Inc. launched an online 3D printing store offering over 200 items.

Global research firm Gartner Inc. estimates that the 3D printing market will reach 2.3 million units by 2018, from 108,151 units in 2014, with overall, end-user spending on 3D printers expected to increase from $1.6 billion in 2015 to around $13.4 billion in 2018.
