Mitsubishi Heavy, GE to tie up on power plant turbines
Tokyo: Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries on Friday announced plans to tie up with General Electric of the United States in the power plant turbine businesses.
As a first step, the firms will jointly develop a “next generation" steam turbine for so-called combined-cycle power plants that use steam and gas turbines, Mitsubishi Heavy said in a statement.
The pair will also consider jointly developing turbines for nuclear power plants and establishing a joint venture to handle design and development and production.
A tie-up between the industry leaders in Japan and the United States could shake-up the sector.
Mitsubishi Heavy has a nuclear reactor development alliance with French firm Areva, while GE has integrated its nuclear power business with Japan’s Hitachi and manufactures steam turbine parts in cooperation with Toshiba, also of Japan.
