Nagoya: Toyota Motor Corp said on 4 October its Lexus division will launch the new Lexus IS F sports sedan in Japan this December, hoping to sell 40 units per month.
The front-engine, rear-wheel-drive car boasts a completely new 5.0-litre V8 2UR-GSE engine, a new 8-speed sport direct shift automatic transmission, and specially selected aluminum wheels and tyres, Toyota said. The expected retail price is 7.66 million yen.
The powerful engine will allow the driver to accelerate to 100km/hr in only 4.8 seconds after start-up, it said.
The carmaker said it has tested the new premium sports car extensively on race circuits in Japan and overseas in order to demonstrate its full potential.
As the domestic auto market remains slack, Toyota and other Japanese carmakers are racing to take advantage of new sports vehicles to stimulate demand among wealthy car enthusiasts, an industry analyst said.
Mitsubishi Motors Corp launched its new Lancer Evolution X sports car on Monday and Nissan Motor Co announced Tuesday a plan to introduce the new Nissan GT-R sports vehicle in December.
Toyota is set to put the Lexus IS F on sale in North America next year.
