New Delhi: Government is contemplating setting up a Central Drugs Authority to regulate pharmaceutical and cosmetics sectors in the country.

“Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has reported that there is a proposal to set up Central Drugs Authority of India to provide technical vision and policy direction for the pharmaceutical and cosmetics sectors and their regulation in the country," said Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister Ram Vilas Paswan in Rajya Sabha.

“The issue of having an integrated regulatory authority would be examined in the light of decision on the proposed National Pharmaceuticals Policy, 2006," he said.

Draft National Pharmaceutical Policy was considered by the Cabinet at its meeting held on 11January and referred it to a Group of Ministers (GoM).

“The first meeting of the GoM was held on 10 April. No time frame has been set for finalizing the National Pharmaceuticals Policy," he said.
