New Delhi: The government on Tuesday ruled out any possibility of putting a cap on the number of ultra mega power projects (UMPPs) allotted to a single player, citing legal impossibility in doing so. “The government cannot limit the number of ultra mega power projects allotted to a single player... Legally it is not possible," power minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said here on Tuesday.

The UMPPs are part of several large power plants, each with a capacity of 4,000MW, that the government wants developed. The government view goes in favour of Anil Ambani-owned Reliance Power Ltd, which has been awarded three of four projects bid out to private power project developers. These are Sasan (Madhya Pradesh), Krishnapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and Tilaiya (Jharkhand). The fourth project at Mundra has been awarded to Tata Power Ltd.

GE, Ratnagiri Gas ink deal on Dabhol plant

New Delhi: General Electric Co. (GE) and Ratnagiri Gas and Power Pvt. Ltd resolved their dispute over the supply of allegedly defective turbines by entering into an agreement to help improve the performance of the Dabhol power plant.

“The agreement will include power availability guarantees for GE’s power generation equipment, improving the long-term, reliable production of electricity from the plant. The agreement will also cover repairs and spare parts, as required," GE said in an emailed statement.

Mint had reported on 4 April about the agreement.
