Kolkata: The Centre would distribute 38 more coal blocks with a total reserve of four billion tonnes to various public and private sector companies for their captive use, union coal secretary H C Gupta said on 20 April.
The government had advertised for the allocation of these blocks in January and received 1,400 applications. “The blocks would be distributed in the next 2-3 months," Gupta said discussing on the sidelines of a national workshop here.
The government had already distributed 130 such blocks with a reserve of 27 billion tonnes to various public and private companies, he added. Gupta said the committee, formed to evolve a policy for distribution of coal, is likely to submit its report to the government within a fortnight.
The committee was formed in January to suggest a mechanism for supply of coal to consumers in different sectors as well as to bring about transparency in coal distribution.
Asked about reports regarding restructuring of Coal India Ltd, the secretary said that Shanker Committee is currently looking at various aspects and studying whether any change are required.
The Shanker Committee is expected to come out with its report within a few months, he said. When asked whether there is any move to merge all subsidiaries of Coal India as part of the exercise to revamp the company, Gupta said, “I am not a member of the committee, and I have no information in this regard."
