New Delhi: Six months after joining the tariff war and seven years after its entry into India’s telecom market, Anil Ambani promoted Reliance Communications Ltd (Rcom) has crossed the 100 million mark in terms of number of subscribers on its wireless network. The telco is the second after Bharti Airtel to hit this mark. Bharti Airtel launched its services in 1994.

The firm aims to cross the next 100 million subscribers within the next three years.

“This includes anything that is riding the wireless network, including the GSM, CDMA - voice, data and VAS. This does not include the enterprise, wireline, retail, DTH customers or Reliance Globalcom’s overseas retail customers," Mahesh Prasad, President, Reliance Communications Ltd said.

While a large part of these subscribers have come from the increased monthly additions due to the ongoing tariff war, the company does not plan to take the war to a new low.

“We don’t see at this point any need for new tariff plans per se. But we will always stay competitive in the market," Prasad said. “The tariff war will continue as many of the new operators have not launched yet or have not completed their pan-India roll-out," he added.

India added almost 20 million subscribers in January taking the total wireless subscriber base to 545.05 million at the end of January.

The company is also planning to rollout its CDMA-based mobile broadband network to beyond 60 cities within the next 100 days, taking the total number of cities covered to 125 offering mobile broadband service, Prasad added.
