New Delhi: Cellular subscriber base in July touched 141.7 million with the addition of 5.76 million new users as Sunil Mittal’s Bharti Airtel captured 31.58% of the market.

In June the GSM addition was 5.3 million.

The latest figures from COAI said Bharti Airtel added two million new users with its subscriber base touching 44.76 million. Last month it had added 1.96 million new users.

Vodafone Essar added 1.68 million new users to take its user base to 32.43 million to retain the second slot while state-run BSNL which is struggling with capacity expansion added just 0.55 million (5 lakh) new users to remain at the third slot with a user base of 28.97 million.

The gap between Vodafone and BSNL in terms of addition of new subscriber now stands at over 0.11 million (or 11 lakh). While Vodafone is gripping the marketshare of 22.88%, BSNL’s share has further fallen to 20.44%.

In June BSNL’s marketshare had fallen to 20.9% from 21.4% in May.

Idea Cellular added 0.67 million new users in July to take its subscriber base to 170 million.

Aircel added 3.8 lakh new subscribers.

BSNL lost its number two position to Vodafone Essar in May. The state-run company’s employees allege prolonged delay in placing the contracts to increase its mobile capacity is the main reason behind its deteriorating performances.
