Kolkata : Bharti Airtel, the country’s top mobile player, has drawn up plans to create a separate vertical to focus on the vast small and medium business (SMB) segment in the country, a company official said.

President and CEO of Bharti Airtel Ltd Manoj Kohli said the SMB segment in the country was witnessing a strong growth and the company has decided to offer voice, mobility, data and bandwidth services to these customers under one roof.

He said Airtel’s focus on the SMB segment had been moderate in the past. However, the company had decided to focus on this segment for the next three to five years.

Kohli said with the SME sector spending a huge amount of money on telecom and information technology (IT), the company was expecting to increase its business in this vertical.

He, however, declined to divulge any financial detail, saying the company was in a silent mode and quarterly results were to be announced shortly.

Kohli also said the company was very bullish on the east. Kohli said that Airtel has tied up with Nortel to bring a complete data, converged voice, mobility and security portfolio to address the specific needs of the SMB segment.

He said that Kolkata had one of the highest concentration of SMB units in the country.Kohli said Airtel has decided to roll out its national launch from the city and it was also among the top seven in terms of housing SMB units in the country.

While Airtel was offering similar services to big corporates, it would now create a strong market segment in the SMB vertical.

Kohli said that Airtel planned to earn 20% of its overall revenues from the eastern region in future. In the last 10 years, Airtel had been able to build up a customer base of one million in Kolkata.
