New Delhi: There’s a reason Vijay Mallya was known as the “king of good times". The flamboyant UB Group chairman bought some of the most expensive real estate around the world and has properties in places ranging from Sausalito in Northern California’s Napa Valley to one of the poshest suburbs of Johannesburg, South Africa. Amid all this, Mallya also did business with Donald Trump, the Republican front-runner nominee for the 2016 Presidential elections in the US, while purchasing a condo at the Trump Plaza in New York.

Here’s a list of publicly known properties (islands, castles included) Mallya owns around the world (and in India).

Sausalito, California

Mallya’s home in Sausalito is “one of the most prominent homes" in town, with “views stretching from Belvedere to the Bay Bridge and San Francisco", according to a 2003 San Francisco Gate (SFGate) report. Mallya purchased the Sausalito property in 6 Bulkley Ave in 1987, when “he had come to the Bay Area when his wife was having a difficult pregnancy, and doctors ordered her to stay".

Mallya, the report added, purchased the 11,000 sq. ft mansion “out of foreclosure for $1.2 million when it was just a shell, and sank many times that amount into its renovation".

Clifton Estate, Cape Town

In November 2010, Mallya purchased a Cape Town mansion, described by the Sunday Times (South Africa) as the “best house in Cape Town" for a reported amount of $8.4 million. The mansion is located on Nettleton Road and has “sweeping views of Clifton beach." The report added, “The mansion—which boasts a sauna, walk-in safe, gym, and garage space for four cars—has hosted movie stars, singers and royalty." Some of its pre-Mallya residents include Prince Carl Philip of Sweden (stayed there during the 2010 World Cup), singer George Micheal and actor Nicholas Cage, who stayed in the mansion for “nine weeks while he filmed the Lord of War". He sold the property in March 2014.

Trump Plaza Condo, New York

A few months before he purchased the Clifton Estate mansion, Mallya, in September 2010 bought a penthouse in Trump Plaza for $2.4 million. The tower is considered the most expensive of its kind in New York. Mallya’s ‘Penthouse A’ is located at 167 East 61st Street in the 37-storey residential tower. It’s most celebrated residents include Donald Trump himself, Bruce Willis, Beyonce and Tony Embry.

Le Grande Jardin, France (or The Grand Garden)

Mallya purchased the property called ‘Le Grande Jardin’ in September 2008, fighting off stiff competition from “celebrities and Russian billionaires", according to LuxuryProperty. The luxury real estate property is on “the Island of Sainte-Marguerite, the largest of the four islands of Lérins, two of which are uninhabited". At the time of the purchase, the Le Grande Jardin, according to the website, was priced between €37 million and €43 million or approximately $53-61 million.

Mabula Game Lodge, near Johannesburg

Located near Johannesburg, the Mabula Game Lodge is rated as one of the country’s finest “game reserves". He owns a 99.5% stake in the 25,000-acre game reserve, for which he paid $6 million in the 1990s (the exact year is not known).

Tewin village, Hertfordshire, England

A “country home" in Hertfordshire is reported to be among Mallya’s most recent real estate purchases. The property is believed to be a “large house near Tewin, a village just outside Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire", according to popular Formula One blogger Joe Saward.

Keillour Castle, Perthshire

The castle, located in Perthshire, Scotland, was acquired by Mallya when he was overseeing the acquisition and transition of Scottish whiskey brand Whyte & Mackay in 2007.

Devika, New Delhi

Mallya owns a house on the plush Sardar Patel Marg in New Delhi. Mallya is also a Rajya Sabha MP from Karnataka, a post he has held since 2010.

Niladri, Mumbai

Mallya also owns a sea-facing bungalow on Napean Sea Road, South Mumbai. The bungalow, famous for the Kingfisher Calendar launch parties, is called Niladri.
