Mumbai: Future Group, the parent of listed entities Future Retail Ltd, Future Consumer enterprise Ltd (FCEL) and Future Fashions Lifestyle Ltd, has promoted Devendra Chawla, chief executive officer of Food Bazaar, to group president, food and FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods).

The move comes as the group looks at integrating the private label and in-house brands retail business of FCEL across the different retail chains such as KB’s FairPrice, Big Apple, Nilgiris, Food Bazaar and Big Bazaar.

Chawla will be responsible for shaping the group’s private brands into brands that understands the new era of food consumption in India. Additionally, he will also be responsible to build a central buying team that will work with leading consumer packaged goods companies to negotiate better terms of trade and get better synergies for all food retail formats across the group.

As the company integrates KB’s FairPrice, which is being rebranded as KB’s in the coming month, Big Apple and the recently acquired Nilgiris convenience store chain under one management, Murali Krishnan, chief executive officer, Nilgiris, is also taking charge as the CEO at KB’s.

During the month, the FCEL team has also been strengthened with the appointments of Manoj Saraf, as chief financial officer. Saraf was previously with Parag Milk foods Mumbai as senior vice-president and head of finance. Before that, Saraf has worked with companies such as Vaibhav Gems, Jaipur, and Zee Telefilms, Mumbai.

FCEL also appointed Anjali Shrivastava, head, people office. Shrivastava is an MBA from NMIMS and also holds a bachelors degree in marketing in people development from Hamburger University, Chicago. Prior to joining FCEL, Shrivastava was with Komli Media as vice-president and global head of human resources.

Kishore Biyani, group chief executive officer, Future Group, has ambitious growth plans for FCEL. “This (convenience store) will be our biggest model going forward," Biyani had said in an interview on 30 December. FCEL houses the convenience chain formats of KB’s, Big Apple and Nilgiris. By 2020, there will be close to 4,000 convenience stores across the three brands up from the 350 odd stores currently, Biyani had said.

Biyani is also looking at new joint ventures and acquisitions to grow the consumer packaged goods business under FCEL “disproportionately".

The growth will be driven by acquisitions and joint ventures. “We are looking at joint ventures for ice cream, chocolates and personal care products," said Biyani on Friday, adding that these will be with global brands looking at coming to India. FCEL is also in the process of setting up manufacturing facilities for oats and pastes. “These will come up by April," said Biyani.
