In a conversation with Mint, Aly Shariff, managing director, Premier Inn South Asia (India, Sri Lanka and Maldives) spoke on expansion plans of the hotel chain in India, the strategy forward and challenges in the hospitality sector. Premier Inn is a large hotel chain in UK with over 600 hotels.
While there are currently two Premier Inn hotels in India – in Bangalore and Delhi – plans are on to open a few more over the next 2 years in cities such as Pune, Goa and Chennai.

All the hotels put together would offer around 750 rooms, with an equity investment of Rs 300 crore.
Going forward, the firm would also look at operating third party assets, through the management contract route, and would therefore gradually move from an asset heavy to an asset light model.
